The first Litro Live! festival of 2012, Double Dutch, was held in partnership with the Dutch Embassy to celebrate the Netherlands and the impact it has had on the world through literature, sports and the arts.
This took place at the Serpentine Bar & Kitchen, Patrick Gwynne’s iconic building, inspired by country living, in Hyde Park. There was a great line up of day events, which led into the evening with talks, debates and live music at the Kensington Gore Hotel.
Special guests included David Winner (journalist and author of Brilliant Orange: The Neurotic Genius of Dutch Football), Simon Kuper from The Financial Times, award-winning writer Ramsey Nasr, Abdelkader Benali (marathon enthusiast and author of Marathon Runner), novelist Sanneke van Hassel (below right) and Flemish writer Chika Unigwe.
About Litro Live!
Celebrating music and the spoken word
Litro Live! has been running since November 2008. It is an evening of stories and music, bringing together writers, poets, musicians and fresh and exciting talent from the world of the spoken word. It features literary readings and poetry interspersed with live music and DJ sets. Most of all, Litro Live! is a chance to gather with friends and fellow literary fiends.
Litro Live! started as a monthly residency at Foyles Cafe on Charing Cross Road, which regularly attracted about 200 people. Now Litro Live! has launched it’s own mini summer festival in Hyde Park, and participated in a number of events throughout the year, including the annual Camden Crawl, as well as hosting summer parties and occupying spots throughout London – one year, we took over a corner of St. Pancras rail station – to entertain guests and passersby.

Critical appreciation for Litro Live!
“Although this was the first Litro event I have been to hope that it won’t be the last, and if you happen to be a London-dweller I would strongly recommend checking out their website for details of their monthly live show…” – Eilidh, posted by bookarmy.com.
“It was an evening of people re-ordering words as well as drinks….a bill crammed with writers, poets, comics and musicians. The tables and sofas were full with a coffee-drinking crowd… talent-and-personality-fuelled events such as these make sure the pages of original writing keep being turned — and should be replicated as much as possible.” – Charlotte Williams, London journalist.
