Non-working mums can become an Eleven Plus Private Tutor for extra income

Are you a stay-at-home mum looking for a new challenge where your skills can really make a difference to peoples’ lives? If you are patient, have the ability to teach and can build rapport and trust then this may be of interest to you. Becoming an 11 Plus Tutor could just be the answer to fulfilling your needs and passions, whilst also helping children reach their full potential to succeed.

What is an 11 Plus Tutor?
In the UK, if you want your child to attend a grammar school, they will have to write the 11 Plus exams to test their capabilities and check they meet the grammar schools’ high standards of academic achievement. Most grammar schools are at the top of the academic league tables throughout the country and consistently produce top achievers. For this reason grammar school places are highly sought after and they are very selective, so in order to give the child the best chance at passing the 11 Plus exams many parents may seek the help of an 11 Plus Tutor. The 11 Plus Tutor will help them focus and concentrate on the entry requirements and help them get up to speed so they are confident and perform well during the exams. The exams is taken in their last year at primary school but some students begin preparing for these all important exams as early as Year 5 to ensure they are well-prepared. The students are tested on Maths, English and verbal and non-verbal reasoning although this may differ between schools.

What qualifications are needed to become an 11 Plus Tutor?
Ideally you will have obtained a degree, or at least be an undergraduate, however there are no formal obligations to meet to become a private tutor in the UK. If you are already in the teaching profession, this can be a good second source of income, and a viable option for any retired teachers too. As long as you are passionate about working with and developing children and are willing to obtain an DBS as most parents would expect this, then you can get started. You may have to obtain the DBS through a third party agency as they currently don’t allow private tutors to do these themselves. You may also want to consider taking out liability insurance to cover yourself and your students.

Although you do not need any formal qualifications to become a private tutor, parents will often want to check your credentials to ensure you are capable of teaching at the 11 Plus level.
