There’s a girl who works at a flower market and the protagonist is another girl who goes there every day that it’s on to buy a tulip bulb. This goes on for a year. Eventually, the girl at the flower market follows the protagonist home to see what she’s doing with them and discovers that they spell out her name – a brief quarrel ensues when we discover that the protagonist is in love with her and that the love is unrequited. Soon afterwards, the girl stops working at the flower market, which we learn when the protagonist revisits it. It ends a year later, when the protagonist has fallen in love with a different (or maybe the same) girl working at a fish market. It’s all set in Amsterdam with cyclists, trams etc. but we can potentially only hint at that rather than making it obvious.
