Cuba: Issue #154 Out July! The Litro Magazine World Series brings to Londoners annually a selection of fresh, exciting literary stars and artists from around the globe.
The Litro Cuba issue will showcase fiction from and about the real Cuba: not Havana-centric but emanating from the entire island – including its rural communities and its exiles.
In July 2016 Litro Magazine will publish a special Cuba edition in translation, guest-edited by the author Leila Segal – whose debut collection of stories, Breathe, was written while she lived in Cuba. Award-winning translator Daniel Hahn – whose translation of The Book of Chameleons by José Eduardo Agualusa won the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize in 2007 – will lead a team of translators including Lawrence Schimel and Dick Cluster to translate the works of some of Cuba’s leading writers today:
Aida Bahr, whose stories touch on the complexities and human contradictions that reflect the reality of men and women in today’s Cuba.
Omar Perez, prize-winning poet, essayist, Zen Buddhist monk and the son of Che Guevara.
Dazra Novak, one of Cuba’s strongest young contemporary female voices.
Coco Fusco a Cuban-American interdisciplinary artist and writer. Fusco has performed and curated throughout the US and internationally. Fusco’s work explores the relationship between women and society, war, politics and race.
Karla Suarez, Orlando Luis Pardolazo, photography from Geandy Pavon and many more to be announced.
To celebrate the launch of the Cuba edition, Litro will take over Waterstones Piccadilly, London, on the 12th July with a jam-packed evening of events. These include: readings, discussions, interviews and live music from up-and-coming musicians, with guest appearances from contributors and surprise acts to be announced.
Highlights from the programme of events include:
5.30– 6.30pm – Writing in the Community workshop: with author Leila Segal and translator Daniel Hahn. 1st Floor.
7-8pm – Conversations with Cuban writers: Karla Suarez, Orlando Luis Pardo and guests. 1st Floor.
8.30-9pm – Let’s Salsa – with musician Nana Clara and band. Ground Floor.
